Deeper Meaning of Photography

In the Oxford English Dictionary the definition of 'photography' is...

...the art or practice of taking and processing photographs.

However, photography is different for everyone. For some people, it is simply defined by its definition-'taking a photo'. To some people it isn't important at all. But, there are those who it is very important to and they dedicate time (even if it's not much) to practicing it and performing it.

Of course, you have professionals who know every little detail about taking photographs; different techniques, how to use the camera properly, how to get the lighting perfect, but there are those who aren't concerned with the technical side of photography. They are dedicated because of the rawness of this art. To them, all they care about is expressing themselves. It's more about creating art with a deeper meaning; one that everyone can relate to in many different ways. It connects us to the real world in the most unique way.

Some people find that photography is a way to express our ideas instead of letting them sit in a sketchbook. It allows you to show people the world through your eyes-whether it be bad or good. For others, it is an addiction, a hobby, a way to relax when you are stressed. For them, after a stressful day, just a few minutes with a camera is therapeutic-even if they are taking a bad picture of a bad subject. It is an escape, a reason to get out and do something. It gives their days meaning to be able to capture and preserve special moments that may never happen again. It helps them to look back on those moments and smile, even if they aren't particularly happy moments. It helps them to relive it if they start to forget. There are those that find it so private and personal that they aren't comfortable sharing it with people they know. For the most dedicated people, they do it because they want to reflect the beauty in a tiny piece of God's handiwork.

Trying to capture the wonders of life and nature is an amazing way to keep your eyes open. You can experience the world in its most delicate, raw and beautiful form. Each time, you experience it in an entirely new perspective.

The Oxford English Dictionary's definition of photography states the facts, but not the truth.
